For over 50 years, the vast and complex underground Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker remained secret and hidden away from the British people. The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker would have been the centre of Regional Government had a nuclear war broken out. The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker was built in the 1950s as part of a comprehensive secret radar network that was codenamed ‘ROTOR’.

As a ROTOR station, the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker had a compliment of 18 officers, 26 NGO’s and 224 corporals and aircraftsmen. In 1958, the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker became central to British government operations when it became part of the United Kingdom Air Traffic Control System, and one of four joint civil/military Air Traffic Control Units. The Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker was closed in 1966 when its role was transferred to RAF Lindholm in south Yorkshire.
